We’ve curated a series of *incredible* music docs 🤓
So Future is a platform I started in 2016 to showcase the next wave in fresh music sounds both online and in the clubs. Primarily we focus on music across the spectrum of forward-thinking, underground electronic music and alternative rnb and hip hop.
Black People Did That is a series we’ve been running across our social media channels for the last 4 weeks or so, and it’s a curated documentary series paying homage to the Black pioneers who birthed pretty much every modern music genre.
The couple of months have been hard and relentless and pretty traumatic at times. And like for many people, music is a huge part of my life - emotionally and spiritually.
Looking closer to home in terms of being a DJ and the industry around me, in relation to how Black creatives are disproportionately represented on festival and club line-ups when it comes to electronic music, as well as behind the scenes in industry roles, I think I felt compelled to celebrate, remind, raise awareness of the crucial role that Black people have played in creating and shaping both the underground and mainstream music that we all enjoy.
From Hip-Hop and R&B to Techno and House, to Rock n Roll and Country, to Disco and Dancehall, to Jazz and Electronic, to Gospel and Grime, the whole nine.
So Black People Did That is essentially a collection of some of the most interesting and informative documentaries that I’ve watched over the years that really dig into the origins, the social and political environment at the time, and just goes on a real exploration of how certain scenes and sounds emerged.
All of the clips are on So Future’s social channels . You can watch all of the documentaries in full on www.sofuture.club. Let me know your thoughts (in the Comments below) when you’ve watched them.
We’re currently working on a veeery exciting ‘Phase 2’ of Black People Did That, so hopefully I’ll be able to share the news soon! Drop your details below for the update.
